Prevalence Of Bacteriuria Among Pupils With Urinary Schistosomiasis In Osogbo

Objectives: This study is designed to determine the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and concomitant bacteriuria among pupils in Osogbo with a view to producing a database for an effective control plan.
Methods: The current status of Urinary Schistosomiasis and infections by other Urinary pathogens was assessed between October 2004 and March 2005 among primary school children in Olorunda Local Government area of Osun State. Urine samples were collected from pupils in primaries 1 to 6 for this study and were analyzed by simple centrifugation concentration method and urine culture as described.
Results: Of 523 pupils examined for eggs of Schistosoma haematobium in their urine, 166 (31.7%) were infested - 102 (36.6%) males and 64 (26.2%) females. were infested. Egg count per 10ml of urine in males was (44.8 eggs/10ml Urine) and that of female pupils was (39.7 eggs/10ml Urine). 54.2% of infested pupils had one bacteria pathogen or the other with Escherichia Coli occurring more than others. The antibiogram of the isolates revealed that ceftriaxone, cephalexine, peflacine and augumentin were the most effective drugs in the treatment of urinary pathogens among the pupils.
Conclusions: Schistosoma haematobium is still being actively transmitted in Osogbo. Clinicians should request for urine Microscopy, Culture and Sensitivity (M/C/S) rather than only urine microscopy in suspected cases of urinary schistosomiasis because of high secondary bacteria infection.
